Connor Evans – Winterlude

With the brutal weather that’s been ravaging the U.S., I think I speak for most of us when I say we need a Winterlude—as in, a break from the season. Making its world premiere right here on the front page, the B-Side to Connor Evans‘s newly-released Keys single may not have the power to bump the mercury up to a reasonable temperature or still those wailing winter winds, but the lyrical flames on display will nonetheless fill Boothgoers with some much-needed warmth. Though it clocks in at a brisk 1:34, this cut is so densely-packed with dope rhymes that it feels a minute or so longer. Over BHB‘s bluesy samples, the Redlands representative emphasizes that he’s been working towards rap stardom since his age was in the single digits. Like what you’re hearing? You’ll be able to find Winterlude as well as its A-side on Evans’s So Cal Soul LP, set to drop digitally April 28.

Tory Lanez - Chixtape 2 (Mixtape)

The Toronto-to-Texas transplant follows up last year's "Conflicts Of My Soul" with his latest project, Chixtape 2 (the official follow-up to 2011's original). Stream/download below
Today he follows it up with Chixtape II (the first one dropped back in 2011), and it’s his slickest, steamiest work yet—mellow, dripping-faucet tempos, a casually cool delivery in the vein of Jeremih, music metaphor come-ons inspired by The-Dream. He’s also interpolated a handful of R&B classics—”Pony,” “The Boy Is Mine,” “No Scrubs”—in a way that’s neither obvious nor exploitative, flipping them just enough to usher them into the aesthetics of 2014 without losing their essence. [FADER]

Devin Miles - Where The DJs At? (DJBooth Freestyle Series #11)

Oft imitated but never equaled, the DJBooth Freestyle Series ran from February 2009 through June 2011. Its 250 total entries were the work of a veritable who’s-who of underground and emerging emcees, including rising stars like Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller. Now, it’s back for a second round. The 11th entry in the relaunched series comes courtesy of Devin Miles, the Pittsburgh representative last featured with December’s 4:12am. On Where the DJs At?, the artist flexes his lyrical muscles over a leisurely, keyboard-laced beat by Christo. Fred Lozaro provides original artwork to accompany the freestyle. Devin Miles doesn’t have any future projects on the agenda, but we’ll keep you posted on his plans as further details emerge.

Jered Sanders – Iron Man

Jared Sanders‘s last Booth feature, the Valentine’s Day-themed Black Butterfly, saw him tenderly pouring his heart out to a special girl. Fast-forward just a few short weeks, and that joint’s gentleness has transformed into aggression on Iron Man, making its Booth-exclusive world premiere as the latest single off the Florida spitter’s forthcoming EP. While Tony Starks gets name-dropped on the hook, this record seems to be equally inspired to the vengeful protagonist from Black Sabbath’s song of the same name. As the Jered spits his caked-up, bullet-riddled verses, Flawless Tracks flips a distorted guitar sample which, though it isn’t borrowed from the 1970 metal classic, shares its heavy, menacing feel. Considered in conjunction with previous singles, Iron Man underscores the diverse array of sounds to be found on Booth-hosted EP Sorry for the Delay. Watch for the project to hit our front page for free streaming and download on Tuesday, March 25

Sotr Caf – One More Step EP

Iowa rapper/producer/turntablist Sotr Caf presents “Where’d Riley Go”, the new self-produced single from his newly released EP One More Step, mixed and mastered by fellow Iowa producer Aeon Grey. A quadruple threat, Sotr began his music career as an emcee before expanding to production, turntablism, and even plays harmonica during his live shows. “‘Where’d Riley Go’ is about a two-hour time in my life,” says Sotr. “I was moving a younger relative to a different city for college. I was freaking out a little about it and when we got to the new place this guy was cooking lunch in the kitchen. I was super suspicious of this stranger. He ended up being the only guy there to help move the heavy stuff. After a few flights of stairs I learned he grew up a few miles down the road from me and was a decent guy. I was relieved he’d be there but right as I was leaving I found out that was his last day there. From then on I would catch myself wondering where’d Riley go.” Of the EP, he says “I was wandering around aimlessly for a long time then one day I decided I was done wandering. One More Step means one more go around, one more step into the abyss, one more anything that’s not what’s behind me.” The One More Step EP is the first in a series of EPs to be released through 2015.

ome Fortune hit us with the hypnotic "Four Flats" back in September, and as with most of his cuts, the C4-produced track now has a colorful visual accompaniment.

While Illmaculate might see music as a trivial obsession, he is currently proving how important his voice is beyond the track. The Portland emcee has been making local headlines since Saturday night, when he refused to perform at his own show after swarms of Police arrived at the venue and disrupted the positive, peaceful atmosphere. For Portland hip hop fans this was just another example of the city actively resisting any shred of urban culture, but for Illmaculate it was the final straw.

“I will not perform in this city as long as the blatant targeting of black culture and minorities congregating is acceptable common practice.” – Illmaculate (via twitter)

Crush Effect – Until The Next (Album)

Soaked in melody, the newest release from southern California duo Crush Effect is nothing short of spectacular. The pristine production throughout "Until The Next" evokes imagery of crystal clear water and sandy beaches, perfect for its Spring release date of March 4th, 2014. Pulling from the infectious influences of jazz and soul merged with modern bass-heavy EDM, these two renowned musicians have created something truly special. Fans of Pretty Lights, Flume, and Rustie will feel cozy with both the visceral and buoyant sounds throughout.

The album begins its seven track odyssey quite beautifully with "Capital L", but the laid back vibe quickly changes pace once "Slacker" gains the spotlight. Next, the aptly titled "Catch You" suits its name perfectly; the striking chord progression and vocals captivate you almost immediately. Laser bass and hefty glitch hop get a proper facelift in "Otis", an obvious hat tip to the great Otis Redding. The emotionally captivating sax and piano on the title track wraps the release on a sultry note, acting as the perfect closing ceremony.

Devin The Dude & Doughbeezy – Lifted

Some feel-good smoothness from Devin and Dough. But then again, you should know that "Devin" and "feel-good smoothness" go hand-in-hand. Anyways, this track will find life on the new compilation from TrakkSounds, Rapid Ric, and Thafixx, "Intervention Episode 2", which is out now.

Everything from questioning society, to gangbanging, to messin around with women, to struggling (no struggle raps though), it’s all authentic. I just simply rap about my life. More people should rap about reality." - GL

O.C. - Born 2 Live (DJ Eclipse Original Remix)

A few years ago, 2Dopeboyz featured DJ Eclipse's amazing, minimalist remix to O.C.'s "Born 2 Live" off Omar Credle's 1994 debut/magnum opus, "Word...Life". Eclipse blessed us now with the original remix which differs slightly from the version that's currently out there. In his words:
I did the original version of the remix at home. I took the 12" test pressing acapella and sampled it into the Akai S-1000 and then did the beat on the S-950. I had recently been commissioned by Columbia to submit a remix for Nas' "Life's A Bitch," so I had the acapella of that and decided to take the "My physical frame is celebrated cause I made it" line and use it for the chorus. Made perfect sense with the song plus at that time O.C. and Nas were part of our whole Serchlite camp, so I was trying to keep it in the family.
Everything was sequenced in Performer on an old ass Macintosh SE computer. I made a cassette of it and brought it in to work. Everyone around the office (Wild Pitch) had liked it, including O.C. whose response was "Damn, why didn't you do this before we put the 12" out?" Can't remember exactly if I had gave a copy on cassette directly to Pete Rock, but one way or another him and Marley got hold of it and played it on Future Flavas. The following week they played it again saying something like "This is the most requested record from last week". So we all got hype back at the office and decided to go ahead and press it up.
If I remember correctly, we did 500 promo copies. The funny thing though is that when I went to Power Play to actually lay down the remix officially, Wild Pitch had sent me with the reel for the Organized Konfusion "Born 2 Live" remix (which is also on the album). Problem with that is it's a totally different version than the one that Buckwild did. It was a few BPMs faster. So I had to sit there with Dino Zervos (the engineer) and pitch all the samples up to make it fit this new version. So although nobody knew that, that's why this OG version is slower and also has some different sequences in it. You'll also notice the "Shit like that was mad deep" line actually echoes out. Can't remember why it didn't in the final version, but it was supposed to.

Mystic - Homage

“Homage” was created with Eligh during the sessions for the Beautiful Resistance album on an incredibly hot day in Los Angeles. This song is not on the album, but DJ Bonds, W.A.R. Media, and myself wanted to share it with you. Enjoy and play this loudly. Love, m

THROWBACK: Nas - It Ain't Hard To Tell

"It Ain't Hard to Tell" is the second single and last track from the debut album Illmatic by the rapper Nas. Although the track was technically the second single on the album, it was the first single to be released after the album was pressed in 1994. The first single, "Halftime," was released two years prior to Illmatic's debut.

"It Ain't Hard to Tell" was produced by Large Professor, the song samples Michael Jackson's 1983 hit single "Human Nature", "N.T." by Kool & the Gang, "Why Can't People Be Colors Too?" by The Whatnauts, "Long Red" by Mountain & "Slow Dance" by Stanley Clarke. The single reached #91 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 1991, Nas recorded a demo tape for Columbia Records, featuring the original version of "It Ain't Hard to Tell" named "Nas Will Prevail". This version is roughly 90 seconds longer, includes longer different verses, and has a more subdued, jazzier beat close to the album version. Pitchfork Media's included the song at number 28 on their Top 200 Tracks of the 90s.
